Day 57 - Buenos Aires (Part 4)

Thursday, 9 October 2014

I realised after visiting the cemetery that many of the politicians, generals and former presidents have streets named after them - my hotel is in Sarmiento 1450. Many of the vaults belong to families, and sometimes it gets overcrowded over the generations, so then the families sometimes cremate the older bodies to make room for the more recently deceased. The only way to get a vault in the Recoleta Cemetery is to buy it from a family who already has a vault there, and a vault costs anywhere between USD40,000 to USD45,000. Otherwise, many people are nowadays buried in a bigger cemetery, almost 10 times bigger than the Recoleta Cemetery, and it is the only cemetery with an incinerator for cremation. Cars are allowed in the cemetery because it is about 20 blocks from the entrance to the incinerator.

I was done with the tour at about 1 pm, and then I had no idea what to do. After some thought, I decided to go to the zoo. I took a cab to the zoo and when I got there it was closed! No luck again! The taxi driver told me that it was closed most probably due to the rain, but I doubt this is the case. So then I told the taxi driver to take me to the Congress building which is near my hotel. I had about 7 to 8 hours before going to the bus station, so I went to a restaurant, ordered lunch and sat down there until about 4 pm. There was a lot of food. I was so full, and with the rain, I really wanted to take a nap which seemed like such a luxury. But no nap for me today. It was good to get out of the rain for a bit though.

Then I walked back to the hotel, and hung out there until about 7 pm. The time passed quickly here because I had wifi access and could do some research about the places I am going to. At 7 pm I took a cab to the Retiro bus station, and at 8.45 pm I boarded the bus which will take me to Puerto Iguazu.
