Europe 2019 - Day 39

14 June 2019, Friday

Today we had to wake up early in order to catch a bus to Bucharest. Back to Romania as we are avoiding Serbia and its visa. It’s a 7 hour bus ride to Bucharest from Sofia. I said a nostalgic goodbye to Sofia. Honestly, I could do this forever. Travel from country to country, town to town, looking for new adventures, new troubles, new fun.

So let me talk a little bit about the weather. Europe is moving into summer now, so the days are long and HOT! There is sunlight here from about 4.30 a.m. to 9 p.m. which is great for jogging before or after work. No such luck in Malaysia. The temperature during the day goes up to about 30 degrees Celsius and there is no cold winds anymore. It’s great weather really for sightseeing but the heat can really get to you when you’re outside for hours on end.

As usual I was bored on the bus and I tried to write my blog as much as I could but it was such a bumpy ride (I think the road conditions here are not so good) that I could only manage it in small doses without my head spinning.

The bus was late. We were supposed to reach Bucharest at about 4.30 p.m. but we only reached closer to 6 p.m. Then the metro to the nearest stop to our hostel and a 1 km walk to the hostel in the still blistering hot sun. Here my friend did what I would consider as a selfish act. She suddenly told me that she will eat Maggi mee for dinner so I had to find my own dinner. It was already late, too late to change money. What little leiI had I spent on the metro ticket. So basically I had to walk around alone looking for a place that accepted credit card to have my dinner.

Getting into the hostel was another issue. We had to watch a video telling us how to get in. At the main gate, I got the key out of a lock box using a code but after unlocking the gate I had to put the key back in and herein lay the problem. The lock box would not close no matter how hard I tried. So I did the next best thing - played the damsel in distress asking for help and of course it worked. A shirtless man came to my rescue. Apparently you had to enter the code not only to unlock the lock box, but also to close it again.

Anyway then we were in but someone had taken our room key! So I had to call the owner on WhatsApp and he told me to take the key to another room because someone else had mistakenly taken our room key. I didn’t mind, this new room was on the ground floor so no need to climb stairs.

Everything settled, I told my friend that next time, she should let me know in advance if she wasn’t planning on going out so that I could also plan my food accordingly. Silence. Whatever. I then went out and luckily there was a nearby supermarket which accepted card so I bought some food to eat, coffee and croissant for tomorrow, and Romanian beer. Then I sat outside to write this blog while drinking my beer. I’d lost my appetite, probably due to anger. But anyway now I have food in case of further selfish emergencies.

So now I’m going to have a nice hot shower and sleep peacefully since my blog is up to date and no further reading to be done for now. Tomorrow, of course, is another story.
