Day 22 - Lake Titicaca (Taquille Island) / Puno

Thursday, 4 September 2014

As usual, I couldn't sleep well last night as I was feeling cold. Also, all the lights had to be turned out to save solar energy, and the toilet was down a flight of stairs outside our room, and I really didn't fancy moving about in the blistering cold and pitch darkness in the middle of the night, so I controlled my water intake, with the result that I woke up with a sore throat. I woke up at 5.30 am after a restless night, and brushed my teeth and washed my face in icy cold water.  Forget about taking a shower unless you're a sadist.

Then breakfast at about 6.30 am which was something like pancakes and coca and munya (not sure of spelling) tea. I have taken a liking to this tea, they put fresh leaves and pour hot water, it's lovely. Then we packed our things and walked to the jetty, where we said goodbye to Olga. She is 36 years old and she already has 2 children who look 16 to 18. She will probably be a grandmother at 42. It suddenly occurred to me that if I ever had a child at say 40, people might actually ask me whether the child is my grandchild! Sweet mother of lord.

Then about an hour or so ride on the boat and we were in Taquille Island. Here I saw white crystal like things on the ground and I was wondering what they were until the guide mentioned that it must have snowed heavily last night, there are still traces of snow. Snow! Of course! I'd never seen snow before and didn't know what it looked like and now I know! Being the curious cat that I am, I touched it (when no one was looking, of course) and took a photo.

From 3,800 m above sea level, we walked uphill (again!!) up to 4,015 m above sea level. On the way I saw stone agricultural terraces, houses and people farming. The main town is also called Taquille, and features a textile and handicrafts shop and some small restaurants. I had a coffee for 3 soles but it didn't taste like coffee at all, but at least it kept me warm for 2 seconds.
