No more nuke!

There is something rotten in the state of Pahang.

That something is a RM700 million refinery that is being built in Gebeng by the Australian mining company Lynas Corp which will discharge radioactive wastes.

As if Bukit Merah was not a lesson learnt. As if the disaster in Fukushima was not enough. If anything, Fukushima teaches us that even an advanced country like Japan has difficulties containing nuclear leaks. What more Malaysia where new buildings have cracks, buildings and bridges collapse, potholes on public roads are never repaired, etc. And this is without natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.

If the refinery was as safe as is being suggested, why can’t Australia build it on their own turf? There is enough land in Australia for such a refinery to be built.

I understand the Pahang State Government has to lure investors. But at what cost? Surely not at the expense of its own citizens!

If the Pahang State Government truly cared about the people of Pahang, they should put a stop to the rare earth plant in Gebeng. At once.

Meanwhile, well done citizens of Gebeng, Kuantan, Pahang! I do feel guilty about not joining our cause. But thanks to people like you, I know Pahang is in good hands.

  1. Sheila, it's difficult to mitigate global warming while trumping the issue of carbon emissions. Data says this low-carbon power solution prevents 1.4 billion tonnes of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere yearly, while Media spins it different. The logic of safeguards gets inverted only when regimes oversea any form of power, given that Chernobyl stands out from Three Mile and although the ills of Sendai's privatization is beginning to show, its end result from the old Russia plant is left to be seen. Down your blog's pike, your underlying fear is whether a 'regime' will run Gebeng.

  2. According to latest reports, the hole in the ozone layer has almost disappeared, meaning CO2 emmissions have reduced to a manageable state. Sorry but I just don't see a need for us to go nuclear. It is self destructive and something tells me we will become authors of our own misfortunes. Misfortunes that can be averted if we set aside pride and greed. Nuclear has become synonymous with power. That's the real problem. We want to be powerful at whatever cost. Am I to watch while the world destroys itself?
